History

Kilitch Estro Biotech PLC was established with the vision of contributing to the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa. The continent represents significant long-term potential for pharmaceutical production, and early entry is widely recognized as having a positive impact on healthcare access, industrial development, and regional supply sustainability. With this understanding, identifying an ideal location for establishing a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility was considered a critical step.

Ethiopia was selected as a suitable location due to its position as the second most populous country in Africa and its favorable conditions for industrial development. Based on these considerations, Kilitch Estro Biotech PLC was established in 2015 as a joint venture between Kilitch Drugs (India) Ltd. and Estro Import and Export PLC of Ethiopia.

Currently, Kilitch Estro Biotech PLC operates a dedicated EFDA-approved pharmaceutical manufacturing facility for sterile cephalosporins (Dry Powder for Injection) and oral solid dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, and dry powder for oral suspension. The manufacturing plant is located at Lega Bari Wereda, approximately 30 km from Bole International Airport, along the national highway towards the Dessie–Mekelle road, and is developed on a total land area of 21,815 square meters. The facility is structured into four functional blocks comprising production for dry powder injection and oral solid dosage forms, utilities, administration and quality, and a  separated and dedicated antiseptic and disinfectant unit.
